How many players are on the team?

On the team:  When the season begins, there are 53 players on the active roster. Prior to this, teams have more players going to training camp to try out for the team.

However, on game day, teams can only have 45 players on their roster; the other eight will be “inactive” for the game.  If the team has a 3rd string quarterback, they only need to inactivate seven players.

Teams also have what they call a “Practice squad” consisting of eight players. These players however are available for other teams to sign.

There are also players listed on injured reserve that can not play for the rest of the season. They do not count in the 53 man roster.

During the off-season, teams can have up to 80 players on their active roster. They may sign players that will try out to make the team during training camp.

Prior to the regular season starting, teams have to make cuts. There are usually two cut dates. After the 3rd preseason game, the roster must be cut to 65 players or less. After the 4th preseason games, the roster is cut to the 53 players.
